10 Netflix Shows You Should Watch While in Quarantine
It’s quarantine season and everyone is staying in their homes. Fortunately, we now have Netflix to keep us entertained!
Here are 10 shows available in Netflix Philippines that I personally recommend.
You have probably watched some of these shows but to the ones you you haven’t watched yet, give it a try. They will surely make the lockdown more bearable.
1. Money Heist (La Casa de Papel)
Why you should watch it: It’s the the hottest Netflix show right now — serving the bingeing demands of viewers in quarantine!
This most-watched non-English language series is actually quite refreshing. The Spanish actors and film crew did very well in making this show a global phenomenon.
Smart, thrilling, and with plenty of heart. The plot is awesome but it is the characters that will make you love the show!
“One more episode and I’ll stop.” You would often lie to yourself.
Why you shouldn’t: There are plot holes that can nag at you. You might need to suspend your disbelief in some instances especially if you are not emotionally invested enough.
2. The 100
Why you should watch it: A highly bingeable and thrilling survival-themed series set in a dystopian but very probably future.
Series is fueled by young enthusiasm and ideals combined with adult fatalism. The characters of the show are often caught in a moral dilemma and you would often find yourself asking what you would do in certain situations.
Why you shouldn’t: It can be fantastical and too convoluted at times. If you are the type that cannot really forgive deus ex machina plot devices, then you might even hate this series.
The first few episodes give off a teen vibe but the show is actually more than that. Watch at least halfway through the series and let the show sink into you.
3. Prison Break
Why you should watch it: If you like Money Heist, you will like Prison Break. It has similar elements especially with regards to ‘masterminding’ criminal activities.
However Prison Break is much more gritty and definitely less ‘woke’ than the Spanish series. Very solid first two seasons with superb plot and interesting characters.
Michael Scofield… Remember that name if you are planning something outrageous.
Why you shouldn’t: There is a slight dulling after the second season but picks up again in the later seasons.
4. Stranger Things
Why you should watch it: A well-produced science-fiction, fantasy thriller set in the ’80s. Feels like a throwback Spielberg flick — it’s fun, exciting, and scary.
Why you shouldn’t: Kids and teens lead this series so it can be a bit campy and immature.
5. House of Cards
Why you should watch it: Imagine a modern times Game of Thrones but all of the fighting is done in King’s Landing. This is perhaps the best ‘pure’ political drama/thriller series ever.
This is Netflix’s first original content series. Therefore it is specifically made to be bingeable. There are plenty of scenes with ‘shock value‘ to keep you glued in and interested.
Why you shouldn’t: If you don’t like too much dialogue, this is not for you because this is a very ‘talky’ show. Not much action. No melodrama. Just pure and deadly politicking left and right. And oh, the later seasons are not that good mainly because of Kevin Spacey’s demise.
6. Vikings
Why you should watch it: Barbaric (and heroic) action series with complex and fascinating characters. This show focuses on Nordic culture and re-imagines actual historical figures and events. The tension between relationships provides compelling drama.
Why you shouldn’t: If you are too sensitive, this is a difficult series to follow. Religious faith, sexuality, and morality are constantly being challenged in this show.
7. Glow
Why you should watch it: Quirky comedy based on actual events and real ladies of professional wrestling in the ’80s. The characters are flawed but likable at the same time.
Actors have chemistry with each other. They all seem natural in their characters. Very funny in a subtle way… almost like a dark comedy.
Why you shouldn’t: Like I said, it’s quirky, and it might not work for you. But if it does… it’s a treat!
8. The Haunting of Hill House
Why you should watch it: More than just a horror series. It scares you but at the same time hooks with its story and characters. You will have many questions and the answers gradually unfold as you binge the episodes. The series is a filmmaking masterpiece.
Why you shouldn’t: Don’t watch this if you don’t like to be scared because the visuals and atmosphere will stay with you for some time.
9. You
Why you should watch it: An insightful and entertaining take on narcissistic psychopaths in love and obsession. What makes this show very interesting is the way runners make you root for psychotic main character!
Why you shouldn’t: If you have been stalked before.
10. Breaking Bad
Why you should watch it: For me, this is the perfect series. A gritty crime drama that will put you on the edge. The science is real, believable at the very least. The tension, emotions, and motivations of the characters are so pronounced that they’re almost tangible!
Great acting, characters, and story!
Why you shouldn’t: Unlike the other series mentioned in this list, the tone of Breaking Bad is subdued and the scope is rather small.
It doesn’t feel epic because it’s just within the confines of a small US city (and not even a popular one). Humanity is not in danger — not even a national concern.
Don’t get me wrong though. You will really feel the plight of the lead — Walter White!
